Nelms Named MaxPreps All-American

 

ROBBINSVILLE — It didn’t take long for the rest of the country to find out what folks around Robbinsville already knew.

 

After a freshman season for the ages, Ella Nelms has been named to the 2026 MaxPreps Small Town All-America Softball Team, earning national recognition as one of the top players in the country from a small-town high school.

 

The annual MaxPreps Small Town All-America Team honors the nation’s best softball players from smaller communities, shining a spotlight on athletes who may not play in large cities but have proven they’re among the best anywhere. It’s a list filled with state champions, dominant pitchers, power hitters and game changers from across America.

 

This year, Robbinsville’s freshman ace is one of them.

 

For a town the size of Robbinsville, having a player earn national recognition is something special. For Nelms to do it as a freshman makes it even more impressive.

 

And if you watched the Black Knights this spring, it isn’t hard to see why.

 

Nelms was the steady force behind Robbinsville’s run to the program’s first-ever NCHSAA softball state championship. Whether she was in the pitcher’s circle or standing in the batter’s box, she seemed to come through every time her team needed her.

 

She finished the season with a perfect 22-0 record and a microscopic 0.29 ERA, striking out 228 batters in 119 innings while holding opponents to an .089 batting average.

 

She wasn’t just winning games with her arm.

 

At the plate, Nelms hit .509 with 29 hits, 19 RBIs and five doubles while providing another dangerous bat in one of the state’s most productive lineups.

 

As good as her numbers were during the regular season, she may have been even better in the playoffs. Nelms helped guide Robbinsville through another deep postseason run before being named Most Valuable Player of the 1A State Championship Series as the Black Knights captured the first softball state title in school history.

 

The MaxPreps Small Town All-America Team recognizes players from schools in rural communities and small classifications who have put together elite seasons. While the schools may be small, the talent certainly isn’t, and earning a spot on the team places Nelms among the best players in the nation.

 

The scary part?

 

She’s only getting started.

 

With three more years left wearing a Robbinsville uniform, Nelms has already accomplished what many players dream of. If her freshman season is any indication, there could be plenty more championships and national honors waiting down the road.

 

For now, though, Robbinsville can celebrate another milestone.

 

One of its own is officially an All-American.
