Robbinsville Claims First Softball State Title

Lady Knights Make History: Robbinsville Claims First Softball State Championship

DURHAM — History belongs to Robbinsville.

The Lady Knights captured the first softball state championship in school history Saturday afternoon, defeating Bear Grass Charter 8-3 at Duke University to bring home the NCHSAA 1A State Championship trophy.

The victory was made even more special as it marked the 200th career win for head coach Billy Knight, who has helped build Robbinsville softball into one of the state’s premier programs.

After three scoreless innings, the Lady Knights broke the game open in the fourth.

Sophie Roberts started the rally with an RBI single to center field. Anna Williams later drew a bases-loaded walk, Khaygan Buchanan delivered an RBI single, and another run crossed the plate on a Bear Grass Charter error as Robbinsville surged in front 4-0.

The Lady Knights never looked back.

Ella Nelms once again delivered on the biggest stage. The standout pitcher tossed a complete game, allowing just six hits and three runs while striking out nine. Time and again, Nelms worked out of trouble and kept Bear Grass Charter from mounting a serious comeback.

Robbinsville’s offense continued to apply pressure throughout the afternoon, finishing with 10 hits. Daphne Barlow and Anna Williams each collected two hits, while Williams and Buchanan drove in two runs apiece. Williams also swiped two bases as the Lady Knights used their speed and aggressive play to keep the Bears on their heels.

Defensively, Robbinsville played a clean game without committing an error. Dreylee Webster led the way in the field with nine putouts as the Lady Knights turned in another championship-caliber defensive performance.

Bear Grass Charter added two runs in the seventh inning on a home run by Aubrey Dotson, but the outcome had already been decided.

When the final out was recorded, the celebration was on.

Players rushed from the dugout, coaches embraced, and a season filled with hard work, sacrifice, and championship dreams finally reached its destination.

For a program that had never won a softball state title, Saturday’s victory was a moment years in the making.

For Billy Knight, it was win No. 200.

For Robbinsville softball, it was the day the Lady Knights became state champions.
